Stories have the power to transform lives, influence decisions, and inspire change. Over the past 25 years, I’ve been privileged to witness this firsthand as a journalist and storyteller. But storytelling is not just my profession; it is a tool that all of us can wield to shape perceptions, amplify voices, and drive meaningful change.
One of the most defining moments of my career was breaking the story of the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls. Securing the proof-of-life video was not just about reporting— it was about catalysing a global movement for justice and rescue.
That story taught me an invaluable lesson: impactful storytelling begins with intention.
Today, I want to share actionable steps for anyone looking to tell their story or use storytelling to create impact:
1. Know Your Audience
Every story has an audience, and understanding who you are speaking to is critical. Ask yourself: Who needs to hear this story? What emotions or actions do I want to evoke?
2. Start with Authenticity
Authenticity is the heart of any impactful narrative. Whether you’re sharing your personal journey, leading a campaign, or telling a brand’s story, staying true to the core message builds trust and resonance.
3. Simplify the Complex
Some of the most powerful stories simplify big, complex ideas into relatable messages. As seen in the Chibok girls’ story, a single video brought the global community face-to-face with a humanitarian crisis, making it impossible to ignore.
4. Incorporate Visual Storytelling
In today’s fast-paced digital world, visuals are essential. Pictures, videos, and infographics not only enhance your story but also make it more memorable.
5. Focus on Impact, Not Perfection
Your story doesn’t need to be perfect—it needs to be impactful. Sharing a genuine, well-structured narrative that moves people to act is far more effective than one polished but devoid of emotion.
6. Empower Others to Tell Their Stories
Storytelling is not just about amplifying your voice; it’s about empowering others. My mission now includes equipping the next 100,000 storytellers from Africa to share authentic narratives that reshape perceptions and create opportunities.
7. Keep the Legacy Alive
Every story contributes to a greater legacy. Think about the long-term impact of your story—on your audience, your community, and the world at large. Document it, pass it down, and let it inspire others to take action.
As I move into the next chapter of my career, my focus is on harnessing storytelling to support individuals, organisations, and governments in crafting narratives that truly matter. Whether through documentaries, media training, or thought leadership, the goal remains the same: to create stories that resonate deeply and inspire a better, more connected world.
So, what’s your story? And how will you use it to create impact?
Let’s work together to shape the narratives that change the world.
